Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle (ICCI) Cultural Heritage Programme Development Internship
A maximum of £2,520.00 based on £7.20 per hour

- A total of 350 hours to be full time at 35 hours per week for 10 weeks

- This internship is open to all students studying at a Scottish university
- Location
- Based in Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle, the Gaelic language and cultural centre in Bowmore, Isle of Islay but travel over the whole island will be required. Business travel costs will be reimbursed.

- Role
Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle (ICCI) is a Gaelic language and cultural centre based in Bowmore, Isle of Islay. We wish to develop a cultural heritage programme which will reflect the unique culture of the island and to do so through the medium of Gaelic. This resource will be of benefit to the local tourist industry and will heighten the profile of Gaelic in the community.
We are seeking an intern to devise the materials for this cultural heritage programme which will consist of 5 separate topics of interest to the general public. These topics may include the following, but we would discuss this with the successful candidate before finalising:- The island’s distilleries
- Finlaggan and the Lordship of the Isles
- The Battle of Tràigh Gruineart
- The Celtic crosses on the island
- Gaelic place names on Islay
Ideally, should time permit we would wish to have presentations made up which could be delivered in the future.
Please note, the interviews for this position will take place in Glasgow. The internship itself will be based on the Isle of Islay.
- Duties
- Researching topics on the internet and in our library
- Interviewing local historians and folklorists in person and by telephone if appropriate
- Analysing data collected and discussing its provenance with other team members
- Liaising with distillery companies, local estates, churches, Historic Scotland and Tourist Board to source materials and confirm factual data
- Maintaining a comprehensive list/Excel database of sources and authorities
- Preparing individual topics for delivery. The format of the finished product will be discussed with the intern and may include booklets, PowerPoint, DVD
- Person Specification
The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate the following:
Essential:- Good communicative ability, both written and spoken, in Gaelic
- High level of competence in IT e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet
- Excellent research / investigatory and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work as part of a team while taking responsibility for designated tasks
- Good time management skills so that all five topics are delivered
Desirable:
- Driving licence & car owner
- Familiarity with local Islay Gaelic dialect and local history / folklore

Through this internship you will have the opportunity to develop skills and experience as follows:
- The ability to enhance your language skills by conversing in Gaelic in a natural setting
- Gain practical research and investigation skills
- Develop your interviewing and interpersonal skills
- Gain knowledge and understanding of business development and strategic planning skills where a product is conceived and delivered within a set time frame and on a fixed budget
- Develop team working skills with other members of ICCI and team building skills with members of community
- Gain an understanding of how a social enterprise organisation operates
- Support
The intern will work in a small team comprising the intern, the Centre Manager and the Cultural Heritage Development Officer. Admin support will be provided as will Gaelic language support and guidance from the Centre’s Gaelic teacher and the Chair of ICCI. Line management will be provided by the Centre Manager and the intern will be fully supported via work plan development, regular formal and informal discussions and reviews.
The company ethos is based on team working and the intern will be positively encouraged to consider projects and to contribute to team discussions. Additional support will be available from the TSIS team.-

ICCI is a centre providing year-round classes, courses and activities on Gaelic language and culture on the island of Islay and, more recently, on mainland Argyll. Moreover, ICCI is an important facility for local Islay people, providing the focus for a range of activities and clubs including training in Gaelic and Gaelic culture, and comprises a community venue, with a variety of rooms for hire, a computer and videoconference suite, Gaelic library, childcare centre and café.
